That’s us, apparently. Sex workers, that is – at least according to this article in today’s Grauniad.
Why oh why must these articles always paint the work we do (and the men who visit us) in such a bad light?
Let’s get the cliches out of the way first – no mean feat, because the article is riddled with them.
Cliche #1: The first sex worker interviewed says, second paragraph in: ‘In the beginning of my crack addiction…’ Enough said. I’ve never taken a drug in my life, unless you count a cup of waccy baccy tea which a kind friend made for me when I was 18. On second thoughts, yes, count that, because seeing green men dance on top of the telly was enough to put me off drugs for life (the odd glass of vino notwithstanding).
Cliche #2: We feel ‘dirty’ about what we do. Not true. (Well, maybe, sometimes, but only in the good way of feeling dirty, if you get my drift 
)
Cliche #3: We have feelings of rejection, leading to our destructive tendancies. This makes the massive assumption that a) being sexually active with multiple partners is self-destructive (religion, anyone?), and b) deep down, we believe we are worthless (yes, so that’ll be why we charge a three-figure hourly rate, because we are so worthless!)
Cliche #4: Clients are physically repulsive specimens. Simply not true. Believe it or not, some are even attractive! Yes, I know, astounding isn’t it?!
Cliche #5: Half of all clients don’t want to wear a condom. Utter bullshit. I don’t know who she was interviewing, but it sure as hell wasn’t me, or any ladies I know. I have never met a client yet who didn’t want to wear a condom.
Cliche #6: We are – and I quote directly from the article here – ‘drug-addicted, Marlboro-reeking twentysomething[s]‘. What rot. I’ll never be a twentysomething again.
Cliche #7: We charge £3k per night. I mean, come on! This is supposed to be an interview with a real sex worker, not some Belle de Jour fantasy novel.
Cliche #8: Our clients hate themselves. Yes, that’s you. Did you know that?! No, nor did I.
Cliche #9: The sex worker is ‘disinterested’. That bloke’s going to the wrong ladies.
Cliche #10: We sex workers wear ‘cheesy perfume’. That is, without any shadow of a doubt, the worst insult in the whole article 
Where was the interview with the lady who wasn’t addicted to drugs or nicotine? With the lady who made the decision to ‘work’ just a few hours per week, who enjoyed good times, fun and sometimes even friendships with the men she met? With the lady who made the informed choice to escape from the 9-to-5 treadmill, and was so much the better for it? Because I’ll tell you this for nothing, that is certainly more representative of my own experience, and talking to other ladies in this line of work, it is representative of theirs too.
And where was the interview with the normal, decent Joe Bloggs who, for one reason or another, likes to have some no-strings fun/intimacy/companionship/red hot sex(!) with a consenting and willing female? Who doesn’t want an affair or emotional attachments, who doesn’t want to rock the boat at home, and who is invariably clean, punctual, and respectful?
To anyone not involved in the paid sex scene, all the article does is cement more untruths about both sex workers and clients alike. And that, as far as I am concerned, does us all a great disservice.
